Found in the remote highlands of Nagaland, India this is rare antique ox yoke. This tribal artifact is not just a testament to primitive craftsmanship but also a cherished ceremonial piece, deeply rooted in tradition. Originally, this remarkable ox yoke served as a crucial piece of farm equipment, playing a vital role in daily agricultural life. However, it wasn’t just practical; it held immense ceremonial significance as well. This antique tribal artifact is adorned with prominent figures, including three exquisitely carved Nandi figures on the top, and delicate lotus flowers gracing each end. Carved from a single piece of wood, this rare Naga antique is a true work of art, showcasing both skill and heritage.

Hand-carved around 1870 from French oak, this plaque was originally intended to function as a ceiling medallion, most likely for a themed boiserie room. The walls of the room would have featured oak paneling with a similar rich brown finish and foliate motifs.

The plaque is comprised of several planks of oak, with the edges forming a roughly three-inch thick oval border. Set within this perimeter is a large canopy of curled leaves with a center roundel. All of the elements rise significantly above the low-lying border, extending about 3 ½ inches beyond and providing depth to the carvings. Our oak plaque can once again be used as a ceiling medallion or it can be hung on a wall as a beautiful piece of decorative art.

With its elaborate Rocaille style, this period Louis XV overdoor was hand-carved in France during the 1700s. Rocaille pieces featured dramatic movements that drew inspiration from nature, often expressed as a series of leafy counter-curves, as seen on this highly carved overdoor.

Supported by a long, chamfered base, the central element is a medallion of grape clusters behind a fluted and gadrooned chalice. A crinkled ribbon that emerges from the top of the medallion gently falls to the sides of the wine-themed items. The entire grouping is surrounded by a sinuous molding of a gadrooned leaf that is topped by a curled leaf dotted with rosettes. Although the leaf coil is asymmetrically shaped, the overdoor has an overall symmetrical appearance, as noted by the identical gadrooned leaves that form open scrolls flanking the medallion.

In the 18th century, this Rocaille overdoor would have been hung over a door, hence the name. The beautiful carving would have been paired with paneling on the walls that had wine and/or foliate themes. It can also be hung as a decorative wall accessory or used as a unique headboard for a larger bed, such as king or California king.
