Until 1987, the extraordinary rocking chair was attributed to Josef Hoffmann. An identical model with the number 267 was discovered in a catalog from the “Società Anonima” (founded in 1883 by Antonio Volpe in Udine, produced beech wood furniture in Italy). There was no indication of an external designer. Even before this discovery, there were reasonable doubts as to Hoffmann’s authorship, as the play fitted too poorly into Hoffman’s strict post-1900 secessionist style.
Volpe’s innovative design inspired many subsequent architects. The idea of ​​the egg shape is found in many later designs of seating furniture.

This particular specimen was made by the Austrian company Wittmann.
