1930’s Gerrit de Blanken Dutch Pottery Bowls Set of 3

This is a set of 3 rare signed Gerrit de Blanken pottery bowls from a private collector. His pieces are found in museums in the Netherlands, but rare to find pieces in the US. This collection includes 3 bowls of extremely thin, but very hard & robust, pottery. First bowl pictured is glazed brown on the exterior and a metallic gray and black glaze on the interior, is signed under the glaze, measures 8.25″ across & 3″ high. 2nd bowl pictured is glazed black on the exterior and emerald green on the interior, is signed on the bottom, measures 6 5/8″ across & 2.5″ high. 3rd bowl pictured has a metallic charcoal glaze on the interior and a dark brown glaze on the exterior, is signed on the bottom, measures 7.75″ across & 3″ high. All 3 pieces are in excellent condition, no damage.

About Gerrit de Blanken:

Gerrit de Blanken (Leiderdorp, 12 October 1894 – Zoeterwoude, 6 May 1961 was a Dutch potter trained for running serial work, but he gradually focused on art pottery.

Life and work
In 1910 de Blanken began working at a flower-pots turning in Leiderdorp. Subsequently, he worked at several potteries, including the tile factory Amphora in Oegstgeest.

Since 1924 he was an independent potter with his own studio, successively in Leiderdorp (1919-1925) and in Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk. He made simple utilitarian and decorative pottery, that was sold by, among others, ‘t Binnenhuis and Metz & Co.

Gerrit de Blanken manufactured exclusively turned pottery. His work has a sober style and is often very thin. Striking is the frequent use of different colors for the interior and exterior of a container or dish. He also produced ceramic designs by Chris Lebeau. One of his students in Zoeterwoude was Hans de Jong.

His work is included in the collections of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in The Hague, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, and the Princessehof Ceramics Museum in Leeuwarden.
