Vintage Design
Charles & Ray Eames will write some of the most beautiful pages in the history of design, in particular by taking advantage of the structural and formal possibilities offered by the plywood. The couple of American designers will be inspired by Alvar Aalto’s work and will develop their own bending and molding techniques of this material. Charles & Ray Eames will work first for film studios where they will make sets, before putting themselves at the service of the American navy during the Second World War. There, they will continue their research and achievements on the plywood, for the development of planes, but also the production of splints for war wounded. The CTM coffee table is a perfect illustration of the work of the Eames. The use of the steel tube and the plywood allows an industrial production of furniture with rounded, flexible and organic forms. The table is round, the plywood is thermoformed to give relief to the tray.
The table is an old edition of Vitra. The base is in chromed steel tube, the tray is in very light wood plywood. Traces of use, water and scratches are visible on the CTM table tray.
86cm in diameter and 39.5cm high.
